Every year you look for Christmas presents. If you're like me, books are not cheap emergency solutions, but always popular and treasured treasures. So here's a list - the first of many - of books that are currently popular.
Just under a month to go until Christmas. When the piles of parcels start to pile up under countless Christmas trees and young and old (especially little ones) can hardly wait for the presents to arrive. Perhaps my family was and is the exception when it comes to presents, but books have dominated our gift piles for many years. From atlases and comics to art books, young adult novels and the latest fiction bestsellers.
If your family or circle of friends are bibliophiles like mine, then I have something for you now and in the coming days and weeks: At regular intervals, I will show you the new favourite books from the areas of fiction, non-fiction and specialist books as well as children's and young adult books. Without personal ratings. Simply to give you an overview of what's currently on the market and to inspire you.
We start with the current bestseller list for fiction in Switzerland:
Philipp Gurt, who was born in Chur, became famous with his autobiographical work "Schattenkind" (Shadow Child), in which he wrote about his childhood as a victim of compulsory welfare measures. In addition to other biographical works, most recently about the former ski racer Carlo Janka, he is best known as an author of crime novels. This includes this book from the series about the "Landjäger Caminada".
Sebastian Fitzek has been one of the most successful German authors for years. His genre is the thriller, often referred to as the psychological thriller. Fitzek's novels are not for the faint-hearted, as his books always tread a very fine line between violence for the sake of the story and excessive orgies of violence - something he is often accused of.
Lucinda Riley was a British author best known for her "Seven Sisters" series, an eight-part family saga. The last volume was completed after Riley's death in 2021 by one of her sons based on notes. The same now applies to "The Girl from Yorkshire", which was completed posthumously by her son but published under Riley's full name.
"Sleepless in Seelisberg" is the 22nd novel by Blanca Imboden. The Swiss author has been under contract with Wörthersee-Verlag since 2012 and made her national breakthrough with her first book published there, "Wandern ist doof". Together with Francs Baumann, she has also realised three books for young people.
"A Question of Chemistry" is the first book by the American Bonnie Garmus, originally published in 2022 as "Lessons in Chemistry". The book has been praised as a "clear-sighted social novel" and has already been adapted as a series by Apple TV+.
Historical novels are a speciality of German author Lisa Graf. After the "Dallmayr Saga", she is now turning her attention to the Swiss chocolate dynasty Lindt & Sprüngli. The first of three planned parts was published at the beginning of October.
For the German actor and author Joachim Meyerhoff, his own life and family are important sources of inspiration for his material. This is also the case for "Man kann auch in die Höhe fallen", in which he deals with the time after his stroke when he lived with his mother.
The short novel by Thomas Strässle, a literary scholar and critic from Baden, also deals with a biographical story. It is the story of his parents, who find themselves separated by the Iron Curtain in the 1960s and devise an ingenious escape plan. In which, of course, everything that can go wrong does go wrong.
Christof Gasser is also a Swiss author, from Solothurn, who is known for his Solothurn crime series, for example. "Spiegelberg" is now the third volume in the Cora Johannis series, in which the journalist of the same name becomes embroiled in a diplomatically sensitive case.
Originally a journalist, Australian Michael Robotham began successfully ghostwriting celebrity biographies in the 1990s. In the 2000s, he shifted his focus to crime novels. "Die Totgeglaubte" is the third novel in the Cyrus Haven series, which is already the author's second successful series.
