With the first snowfall now settled on the Swiss mountains, it’s time to wrap up warm and head outside to enjoy some outdoor activities. Your choice of boots depends on what you’ll be doing and how much you feel the cold. Some of us put function above fashion and value winter boots that actually keep our feet warm; others want to make a fashion statement. Our rundown covers boots for every occasion.

Après-Ski boots for dry weather

Dancing queens wear shoes to get them noticed, and overknee boots and lace-up heels are the current must-haves. Admittedly, they can be a bit risky, as you never know whether the weather will change. Nevertheless, these styles are fun, and you can combine them with dresses and trousers to create different looks.

Transitional styles for the city

High-sided styles made from waterproof leather are good options for those of us who hate giving up our trainers, as they’re sporty yet stylish. Classics like ankle boots and shorter styles are perfect paired with skinny-fit trousers or skirts and tights.

London calling: it’s welly weather

In cities like Zurich, snow is rare, and it soon turns to grey sludge anyway. That’s why classic boots like wellies are great paired with thick socks in winter. They’re a protective layer against puddles and their bright colours are sure to boost your mood in grey weather.

For minus temperatures in the urban jungle

To protect your feet, it’s worth opting for rubber or leather uppers. They keep out any damp from rain showers and are toasty and warm paired with thick socks.

For snow in the city

Fleece linings mean that you’ll be nice and warm in these boots, which will stand up to a walk in the snow too. Some of them, like the evergreen Dr. Martens, also impress by not only keeping you warm, but ensuring slip resistance with grip on the rubber sole.

For copious snowball fights in the mountains

Whether you’re building snowmen or exhausting yourself with snowball fights, these boots are perfect. Fur or fleece lining and waterproof uppers provide comfort and warmth for sledding or building snowmen.

For mountaineers and long mountain walks

Wherever you go, these winter shoes will even provide protection for sporting activities in the snow. They are lined, knee-length and keep your feet dry thanks to sealed stitching.

Shoes fit for walks in the snow (and on the moon)

The inimitable astronaut-inspired moon boot is a perennial favourite when it comes to winter footwear. Super thickly lined yet ultra-light, they make long walks in the snow a piece of cake. Their wide range of colours catch the eye and their slip-resistant soles mean that they’ll never you down.
