How to send your winter clothes on a well-deserved summer break
by Laura Scholz
Temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius in the shade are great, but only if you’re relaxing at the lake. Read on to find out how to keep and look cool in unbearable summer temperatures.
It's always the same old story: in winter, we miss summer and as soon as the temperatures rise to 30 degrees, we’re complaining again. Unfortunately, I’m exactly the same. Don't get me wrong, I love the heat – just not when I'm supposed to work in the office in tropical temperatures. In my free time or at the beach, I can’t get enough of it. Did you know that wearing the right clothes makes the summer heat a lot more bearable? Let me tell you how to stay stylish and cool.
Choosing the right fabric is key. While natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and silk are breathable and therefore have a cooling effect, synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon store heat. These chemical fibres hardly absorb any moisture, which means heat is accumulated and bad smell is guaranteed. That's why I avoid full trams in the summer. Yuck!
Have you noticed that you sweat a lot faster when you're wearing dark clothes? That's because colours such as black or navy absorb and store heat. Light colours do the opposite and are therefore a much better choice for hot weather. Luckily enough, light linen clothes are also super trendy this summer.
Loose-fitting clothes offer better air circulation than skintight clothes – which, by the way, also encourage spider veins. Instead of wearing skinny jeans and tight tops, go for loose shorts or floaty skirts, culotte pants and flutter dresses.
If the humidity is low, I recommend keeping your full body covered with long clothing. After all, it’s no coincidence that people in hot countries wear long clothing. Why? The fabric protects your skin from direct sunlight, and you don’t warm up as quickly. So swap your denim shorts for a floaty maxi dress – another summer trend!
In summer, choose sandals, as they allow air to get to your toes. If you have to wear sneakers or closed espadrilles, I recommend using a breathable terry cloth insole. This prevents your shoes from smelling. Your teammates will thank you...
If you're prone to sunstroke, like me, always cover your head. Trust me, I have dark hair and it tends to get very hot. Don't like sun hats? Try a baseball cap.
