Five fashion brands I think we should add to our range
by Stephanie Vinzens
Do our outfits really have to be simpler and more functional the older we get? My answer is: no. Living proof: music and film producer Lou Adler.
There was a discussion between two of my male colleagues in the office recently. One of them said he would like to wear baggy trousers again, after all, he used to wear them and now they were back in fashion. The other said no, he was really too old for that now, you have to move with the times and adapt accordingly.
The appearance of Lou Adler. The Chicago-born music and film producer turned a proud 90 years old on 13 December 2023 - and (in my eyes) dresses better than 98 per cent of the (much younger) men around me. Pensioner beige and inconspicuous basics? Not a chance. Instead, the co-owner of the legendary Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood wears beanies and colourful Crocs. Not age-appropriate? What does that even mean!
The Instagram account @leaguefits has dedicated a gallery to Adler's fantastic outfits, which I would have loved to throw into my work colleagues' discussions as Tinder. And which serves as inspiration for me. To never forget that we can all wear what we like. No matter how old we are.
The executive producer of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" in a blue blazer with white track pants and colourful Crocs in a batik look. Béret and sunglasses match the trousers - the man knows how to put an outfit together.
Why not wear hoodies when you're over 80? Exactly. Lou Adler combines his with grey checked trousers. Béret, sunglasses, shirt and Crocs are white and complete the casual look.
Adler can also wear black, as you'll see in a moment. But he wears bold colours like yellow just as well. Everything about this combination is just right, right down to the striped shirt peeking out.
Even those who shy away from bright colours can take a leaf out of the book of this father of six. He easily breaks up his black-on-black look with white accents.
Small details such as colourful trainers and striped socks add that certain something to a simple outfit. Adler relies on his signature headgear, the Béret.
. always looks sophisticated. Styling pros like Lou Adler create casual highlights with small but subtle details such as jewellery or socks.
Jumper, trousers, shoes and that's it? Sure, that works too. But if you want to take your outfit to eagle level, you need to pay attention to details such as headgear, jewellery, sunglasses and even socks. It's these little things that make the difference.
Always in the mood for good hits, great trips and clinking drinks.
