Simple: homemade gift ideas

Every year we ask ourselves the same question: what can I give for Christmas? If you like DIY or cooking, I've got just the thing. These three gift ideas not only save your budget, but are also beautiful to look at. I've tried them out for you.

Homemade aromatic salt

This gift is perfect for gourmets. I've selected two variations to delight your loved ones. The idea is simple to put into practice and inexpensive.

Orange and chilli salt

You'll need chilli, sea salt and an orange. Pour the desired amount of salt into a salad bowl. Cut the chilli into small pieces and mix with the salt. Then add the orange zest to the salt. Leave the salt to dry for two days.

Thyme and lemon salt

Pour the salt into a bowl, add the coarsely chopped thyme leaves and lemon zest. Mix everything together and leave to dry thoroughly. You can vary the quantities to suit your preferences.

Herbs and citrus fruits don't need to be dried beforehand, as the salt absorbs enough moisture. Let your imagination run wild when selecting ingredients. The world of aromatic herbs is immense and can be combined as you wish. I've deliberately not given quantities for the ingredients, as these depend on your tastes and the intensity with which the ingredients need to be mixed with the salt. You can offer the different salts in a small plastic bag, in a jar or even directly in a small mill. You'll find my photos at the top of the page.

Homemade chocolate

There are so many types of chocolate, why not offer your own creations?

Buy the chocolate and the desired toppings. I've chosen caramel, pistachios, hazelnuts and goji berries.

First, let the chocolate melt. I took a saucepan, filled it with water and placed a plate on top containing the chocolate. The steam released over a low heat is enough to melt the chocolate, but you still need to be patient. Don't let the chocolate get too hot. If it rises above 40 degrees, it will lose its shine and may contain lumps.

Once the chocolate has melted, you can pour it onto a lined baking tray. Take care not to spread the chocolate too thinly, otherwise it will become brittle. Spread the various fillings over the chocolate and leave to cool overnight. Cut and wrap the chocolate bits in a beautiful bag and all that's left is to give it away.

Turning jars into vases

The idea couldn't be simpler and will spruce up your home. All you need is: newspaper, jars and spray paint in the colour of your choice. Wash the jars and remove any dirt or greasy residue.

Start by protecting the ground with sheets of newspaper or similar. Shake the spray can well and start painting the jars placed upside down on the floor. Make sure you only spray a thin layer of paint to avoid dripping. Repeat this step on the dry paint until you achieve the desired opacity.

If you want a personal touch to your vase, you can add ribbons or sequins, or paint the jar with different colours.

It's best to give the vase with matching flowers inside.
