Peppa Pig: My daughter's Netflix series

Children love Peppa Pig. My daughter is also a big fan. Peppa the pink pig isn't just lovable, helpful and inquisitive, but can also be really cheeky and naughty at times.

My childhood was characterised by series such as Tom & Jerry, Fred Flintstone, the Smurfs and the Gummi Bear gang. There was hardly any television for me as a toddler. LEGO, Brio trains and Barbies were my pastime. I was happy without TV. As a reward, I was allowed to watch the "Guetnachtgschichtli" on SRF in between. A highlight. Replay and streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon and Teleclub Play didn't exist yet. I missed the bedtime story many times. It was never really bad. I didn't know anything else. But then came the age of the Teletubbies. This series is deliberately designed for the target group of small children and tries to get them used to the TV box at an early age.

I still remember the first episode today. After Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po had introduced themselves, my TV was switched off again. I thought the series was too daft. In my opinion, the Teletubbies don't have a real storyline. I haven't been able to get rid of this negative impression over the years. Even today, now a mum myself, I would never play Teletubbies for my daughter. A pure waste of time.

A sensible alternative is needed. A series that my three-and-a-half-year-old daughter enjoys watching, that teaches her something and that doesn't give me a vomiting fit: Peppa Pig.

Who or what is Peppa Pig

Peppa Pig, or Peppa Wutz in German, is a British animated television series for children. Peppa is the daughter of Papa and Mama Wutz and the sister of Schorsch. It's a family of little pigs whose faces remind me of a hairdryer. In the five seasons, we as viewers accompany Peppa on fun adventures with her friends and family.

Peppa and Schorsch visit a few museums with their parents and help Grandpa Wutz with the gardening. They go through illnesses, learn at school, sing and camp with their teacher Madame Gazelle, go on holiday in a caravan and take a look behind the scenes of a fire brigade. These are just some of the topics your child will learn about. In addition, one episode explains where the Löffel family (rabbits) live and that Luisa and Linus Löffel eat carrots. Each family represents a different animal and behaves accordingly. Another learning process for your child.

The series is bursting with harmony and optimism, my little one loves it. Maybe that's why, because the perfect world of Peppa allows children to immerse themselves in their own imagination in a simple and fun way.

However, it's not all sunshine and roses. Peppa has her dark side. The little piggy is cheeky, often makes fun of her dad, hates tidying up, argues with her friends and knows exactly what she wants. I can only guess whether this has a negative effect on my child's behaviour. For me, the positive aspects outweigh the negative. It entertains us as a family and opens up my daughter's perspective in different ways. And let's be honest: we were definitely never wrapped in cotton wool by Tom & Jerry, Fred Flintstone, the Smurfs and the gummy bear gang.

The series "Peppa Pig" is currently available on Netflix, Youtube (official channel) or Super RTL.
