Once, twice, three times: Jonathan Anderson is (once again) Designer of the Year
When the British Fashion Council calls for an award show, the whole fashion industry comes running. For one person in particular, it's usually worth turning up: design high-flyer Jonathan Anderson.
The Fashion Awards are presented every year on the first Monday in December at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The only thing that has changed about this tradition is the name - until 2016, the awards ceremony was known as the British Fashion Awards. The awards recognise British brands, of course, but also international brands, designers and personalities who have made an outstanding impact on the fashion industry over the course of the year.
In addition to awards for the best up-and-coming creatives or the most sought-after model, the prestigious Designer of the Year Award will also be handed over to reverent hands. And for the third time in a row, it will go to Jonathan William Anderson.
Who is JW Anderson?
Yes, all good things come in threes. And all good things obviously come from the pen of Jonathan Anderson. The blonde with the melancholy look from Magherafelt, Northern Ireland, originally dreamed of a glamorous life in acting, even moving to New York and attending the renowned Juilliard School. Only to realise there that his heart wasn't really burning for the roles, but much more for costume design. A complete career turnaround later, he completed a degree at the London College of Fashion, then landed a job at Italian cult fashion house Prada and founded his own menswear brand JW Anderson in 2008.
Since then, Anderson has really only known one thing: success. From the very beginning, his collections have not only received praise, but also financial support: he collaborates with Topshop (2012), designs a capsule collection for Versace Versus (2013) and takes over as CEO in September 2013.In September 2013, he took on the position of creative director at the Spanish luxury brand Loewe. And because his days are apparently still not completely full, the 41-year-old has been regularly launching affordable collaborations with the Japanese fashion chain Uniqlo since 2017. In 2022 and 2023, he will be working as a costume designer for director Luca Guadagnino's films «Challengers» and «Queer», while also dressing pop star Rihanna in the legendary red Loewe jumpsuit, which she wears during her Super Bowl Halftime performance.
Anything else? Oh yeah: After eleven years, Jonathan Anderson quit his job at Loewe this March - only to announce his new role as Creative Director at Dior in April. I think it's legitimate to say: the man deserves the award. Every time.
