Maybelline’s glitter mascara: this diva’s craving the spotlight

No matter what it is Maybelline launches from the Sky High line, people go crazy for it. The mascara’s latest glitter version’s already a hit online. But is the hype justified?
I would’ve loved sparkling eyelashes for Christmas or New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, the new version of the Sky High mascara from Maybelline, one of the most popular mascara franchises, wasn’t out yet then. Now that Space Diamond’s finally available, it’s flying off the shelves. But does it really make your lashes look like they’ve been sprinkled with fairy dust? Or is this another case of being deceived by the flattering ring light effect common on social media?

Reality not as bright
The first time I use the mascara, I apply it to my light, mascara-free eyelashes. After putting on three or four coats dry, I take a look at the result: only the tips of my lashes are white. Not exactly a magical look in normal daylight either. Instead, I just look like I’ve skipped my morning face wash.
On my second dry, I use Space Diamond as a topper. This means I first apply a coat of waterproof black mascara and then use the glitter mascara to add accents once the base layer has dried. Using this method makes the glitter come out a little more. But it’s still a far cry from the sparkling eyes I’ve seen on social media. In my hair, where the mascara can also be applied, it just looks like I have grey strands.

So why does it look so damn cool on beauty influencers?
Well, that’s mainly down to me not shining a torch into my face. In the right light – think direct sunlight, candlelight, flashlight – Space Diamond can really be an eye-catcher. But if the that’s not the case, the result leaves a lot to be desired.
Incidentally, the mascara’s easy to remove.
In a nutshell
Cool idea, sobering result
Pro
- Pleasant brush
Contra
- The glitter hardly shows in normal daylight
- A base coat of dark mascara is essential for light lashes

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
