Maxing out midi skirts – my style guide
While maxi skirts are the way to go in autumn, skirts are getting slightly shorter again with the colder temperatures. Here are 3.5 ways to combine a midi skirt.
Are you team mini or team maxi skirts? Either way, I have news for you: midi skirts are back. Is that good or bad news? That’s up to you to decide. Midi skirts are the materialised compromise between long and short skirts, between showing off and hiding your legs. Instead of opting for one extreme, the midi skirt ends at the middle of the calf and gently skims the knees – and can easily look overly prim. It’s easy to get the midi skirt look wrong. Follow this guide and you’re sure to get it right.
1. Boots make your legs look longer
The just-below-the-knee hemline of midi skirts can mess with your proportions and make you look short and stout. Shoes with heels counteract this. A few centimetres are enough to make your legs and your entire silhouette look longer. Boots are particularly good at creating this effect, as their shaft serves as an optical extension of the foot, providing additional length.

2. Spice it up with patterns and colours
Calf-length skirts, especially the currently popular pleated styles, can look old-fashioned and conservative. If that’s not the look you’re going for, opt for trendy patterns or bright colours. This styling rule applies to both the skirt itself and your accessories. The choice is yours.

3. Layer away
Love the layer look in winter? If so, that’s your cue to get a midi skirt. Layered over trousers, it adds texture and depth to your outfit and makes sure you stay warm. A midi skirt made of coarse, chequered fabric works particularly well, as the pattern adds a pinch of punk to the mix.

3,5. Mini, midi or maxi, skirts are for everyone
Strictly speaking, this isn’t a styling tip, but a friendly reminder. If you want to wear a skirt, wear a skirt. Period.
