These days, balaclavas are as much a part of winter as rosy cheeks. These clever hat-scarf hybrids make life easier for us in the cold months.

They combine the best of three accessories you can’t do without at this time of year – hat, earmuffs and scarf. Balaclavas are snuggly knitted hoods (unattached to a jumper) that nestle around your head and neck, stopping any heat from escaping through your scalp and any cold wind whistling around your ears or creeping into your collar.

Once you’re inside and warm, you can take off the hood and put it in your pocket. No more getting annoyed untangling your scarf, no more having to bring multiple garments out with you.
