Iconic, useful, minimalist: this mobile lamp does (almost) everything right
Verner Panton was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. I tested his portable Panthella lamp, trying to find out whether it really is as good as everyone says.
For design fans, 2026 is all about Verner Panton, who would’ve turned 100 this year. The Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts is celebrating him with the exhibition Power, Pop & Plastic, describing him aptly: «Few have so fundamentally revolutionised our concept of living as Danish designer and architect Verner Panton.» With his furniture and lighting, he both redefined shapes and colours and shaped the lifestyle of an entire era.
I, on the other hand, want to pay tribute to Panton with a personal product review. The Panthella 250 Portable, an easy-to-move version of the legendary Panthella lamp, has been with me for over a year now. In that time, I’ve found out all it can do.

Colour variants, material and shape
The LED version I own comes in a warm beige, blending effortlessly into my interior. It’s also available in other colours such as classic white and soft pastel shades.

If that’s too monotonous for you, Louis Poulsen’s just launched the Originals Collection, including a new, high-contrast colour combo of the portable table lamp. According to AD-Magazin, the special feature of this design is an exciting interplay between the high-gloss chrome-plated trumpet base and coloured opal shade (article in German).
But regardless of the colour, the high-quality acrylic material used makes the lamp light yet robust. The integrated diffuser ensures that light is distributed evenly without casting annoying shadows.

At 24 centimetres tall and a diameter of 16 centimetres, the Panthella 250 Portable is compact enough to be used flexibly. At the same time, however, it’s large enough to be a stylish statement piece.

Using it
The Panthella 250 Portable scores extra points with me simply for being wireless. Thanks to the included rechargeable battery, I can take it anywhere. I most often use it as a mood light in my living room, sometimes as a night light or to replace a candle on the dining table.

Charging is just as straightforward. The lamp’s fully ready for use in around three hours via a USB-C port discreetly integrated into the base.

According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts up to five hours at full brightness. If you dim the light, it’ll go even longer. Given my continuous use, however, it’d be good if the runtime were a little longer.
Three light levels
I can choose between three brightness levels using a small ball on the shade. Whether you want subdued, atmospheric light or brighter lighting for reading, the lamp’s always pleasant, even at maximum luminosity.
Indoors and outside – a real all-rounder
Another highlight of the Panthella 250 Portable is its versatility. Although it isn’t officially designated as an outdoor lamp, it cuts a fine figure when used outside for short periods. I tried it out at a dinner in my garden and a picnic – it illuminated the tablecloth nicely.
