How to make your open shelf an eye-catcher

Treat your open rack like an exhibition that you can curate with your favourite things. Cleverly conceal all other everyday objects - I'll show you how.

Open shelves have the advantage that you can find your things more quickly. The disadvantage is that the more you store, the more cluttered they can quickly become. I'll give you five tips on how to turn a functional shelf into a visual highlight.

1. fresh start

Take everything off your shelf and spread it out on the floor. Then, depending on the location and intended use, form groups with things that you:

  • like to display and are for decoration. These can include vases or magazines.
  • Regularly used. Your Bluetooth speakers in the living room or your mug in the kitchen, for example.
  • needed at long intervals. In the study, for example, this could include less attractive items such as your five external hard drives.

2. decoration first

First of all, place decorative objects from the first group. Make sure they are evenly distributed across the individual shelves. Here, it can be particularly beautiful to stage a vase as the main protagonist or together with many others.

3. "Function follows form"

Then arrange the group with items that are in daily use on the shelf. Allow enough free space next to the decorative objects. Then store the third group in storage solutions. Closed boxes are colourful and practical. You can store far more in them than if you only use the shelf space. At the same time, your arrangement around them will stand out better.

5. pyramid-shaped

For a calm effect, arrange all items in the shape of a pyramid. Distribute large items and storage boxes on the lower shelves. This distributes the weight visually and pragmatically. Pile up all the smaller ones alternately towards the top.

5. colourfulness

Picture groups of similar colours per shelf or compartment. A colour scheme creates a uniform effect and adds a splash of colour. For example, you can choose a new colour for each shelf to create a striped look. Or achieve a uniform look tone on tone.
