Goodbye Tüechli-Tetris!

The heat calls for cooling. Preferably in the form of water on my skin. Swimming pool? I think that sucks. Natural bodies of water? Too far away for me. So that leaves me with my own pool.

I love water, always have. I could and still can spend hours in the cool water. Washerwomen's hands are my constant companion in summer. This year I will probably spend the hot months in Switzerland. No sea, no waves and one big problem: the swimming pool is not my thing.

No to meat inspection

The pool is always full when the weather is nice. Unless you go early in the morning or late in the evening, then you might be lucky. Those are my times when I go. I'm just not a fan of stuffing my bag into some tiny gap and then gawping at other people's oily bodies all day. The whole flesh inspection in the bathing centre really goes against the grain. There's always a bunch of teenagers walking up and down the side of the pool with their swimming trunks pulled up as if they're about to be judged by Heidi Klum. There are only a few moments when I'm really amused. When someone stumbles, for example. A little nasty, but I'm allowed a little schadenfreude. And then there's this thing with the chlorine. Regardless of the time of day, it smells like it. Chlorine is actually odourless and only develops a pungent smell when it comes into contact with urine. Three guesses what that means ...

I wish

I much prefer natural water anyway. Sure, everyone pees in it, but at least it's not rubbed in my face. I also like the water resistance better, it's easier to swim. Even better: I can open my eyes under water without surfacing with redder eyes than Snoop Dogg. And yes, there are also lots of people at the lake (Hallwilersee in Aargau in my case), but I know where they don't go. Rivers are also great. You don't even have to move much. Just drift along and let your mind wander. Just don't miss the exit, otherwise you'll end up in the sewage treatment plant. It's just a shame that these waters are too far away for a little after-work swim. At least for me. Especially without a car.

So, now I've explained what I don't want or can't do and I've ranted a lot about the bathing area. That's not really constructive, but it's done me good. Nevertheless, a solution has to be found!

Splashing around in your own garden

After the process of elimination, the only option is your own pool. But in-ground pools are expensive and take up space. However, there have long been good alternatives for cooling off. I may not be able to swim any lengths with the above-ground pools, but they are certainly good enough for splashing around in the evening. Of course, they are also filled with chlorinated water, but at least I have control over who is peeing in them and who is lying next to me on the lawn. And this meadow is in my own garden. No annoying lugging around bath towels, snacks and water bottles. No, everything is chilled and close at hand.
Sure, you need a little space in your garden, but it's often less than you might think. And what's a little less lawn space compared to privacy when bathing?

What type are you?

Do you also recognise these problems or are you a die-hard swimmer? If you call the pool your second home, then I admire your love of people. If, like me, you have slightly sociopathic traits and a bit of space, then let's have your own pool!
