No more tangled cables: 7 stylish cordless table lamps
by Pia Seidel
The night light accompanies your child through the night by providing better spatial orientation and a cosy atmosphere. But which model suits you and your child?
Six night lights decorate the bedrooms of my two children and provide indirect lighting. In addition to a night light plug, they include a decorative light, a wall light and three table lamps. I'd be happy to share my experience with the different models with you so that you can find the right night light for your needs.
The advantage of a night light that you plug directly into the socket is its price, cordless use and size. Thanks to its compact dimensions, it fits in any bag. It is therefore particularly practical when you are travelling or using the light in different places. In the corridor, a plug-in model with an integrated sensor is ideal, as the light switches on automatically when your child wants to join you or go to the bathroom at night.
Despite the low price, the models differ in their features. In addition to simple lighting, some models include a twilight sensor or project images onto the wall. I recommend choosing a model that doesn't shine too brightly or is dimmable. A childish motif or cute projections help the child to fall asleep, but are not absolutely necessary.
Standing night lights are placed on a table, furniture or shelf. They differ the most in terms of price and offer you different features. With some models, for example, you can change the light colour, adjust the intensity of the light, play lullabies or project a starry sky onto the ceiling. There are also nightlights with a motion detector, automatic switch-off, time display or loudspeaker function. You can also customise the power supply to suit your needs. Your child can cuddle with some models thanks to the soft material.
For parents who like to have an all-rounder and want to use the night light flexibly everywhere, these standing models are the most suitable.
Personally, I prefer simple models without all the bells and whistles. I just need to be able to dim the night light and change the colour if necessary. If it's handy and I can easily use it in another place, all the better. As at least one of our lights is on all night to guide the little ones, a motion detector or automatic switch-off is unnecessary.
Wall lamps are practical for reading in the evening. They allow you to switch off the bright ceiling light and create a cosy atmosphere. Most wall lights are almost too bright as a night lamp. Mounted above the bed, your child can operate the switch themselves if necessary. To still have a small light source at night, I recommend combining the wall light with a dimmable night light.
I don't like the cable that hangs down from the wall on most models. This is not suitable for small children. However, they will enjoy switching the lamp on and off as often as possible.
Wall lights for children tend to be in the mid-price segment. Due to their size and attachment to the wall, they are intended for fixed installation.
The lighting in the children's room does not necessarily have to have a childish motif. There are simple decorative lamps that also look great as night lights. As these decorative lamps are not specially designed for children, you must make sure that the model does not get hot. Otherwise your child will quickly burn themselves. You are generally best off with an LED model. They only get warm to the touch at most, do not contain any toxic substances such as mercury, can be dimmed, are economical and still bright enough.
