40 g
Cold and rainy weather has the Swiss population putting the kettle on. In the last two months, a third more tea bags and loose tea were sold at online retailer Galaxus compared to the same period last year. Fruit flavours and matcha (green tea) are proving particularly popular.
Summer, sun, swimming pool – not so in 2024. This year, the Swiss population’s been faced with an underwhelming number of hot days. Instead, temperatures have been dropping regularly and it’s been pouring rain. These unpredictable weather conditions have had an impact on the shopping habits of Galaxus customers. One of the big winners in terms of sales has been our tea range.
Instead of sipping on chilled lemonade on a terrace, many people have been clutching mugs of hot tea this summer. This has been revealed by the sales figures of online retailer Galaxus, where the demand for tea bags and loose teas has increased noticeably in recent weeks compared to the same period last year. Over 40% more teas were shipped to customers across Switzerland this May and June. In terms of units, sales are roughly at the same level as they were March.
This means the tea trend is ongoing and growing. Already back in 2023, Galaxus customers were buying over 60% more rooibos, ginger-lemon and other kinds of infusions.
Despite falling birth rates in Switzerland, Weleda’s Organic Nursing Tea is currently our best-selling tea. It’s followed by matcha, i.e. green tea, and Mediterranean peach.
The top 10 teas at Galaxus reveal that fruity notes are currently very popular. These include strawberry-lime and forest fruits.
Karina Stump, Head of Category Management Supermarket at Galaxus, explains: «Many types of tea can also be enjoyed cold. So if you’re buying tea at the moment, you haven’t necessarily given up on the rest of the summer being sunny, you’re simply prepared for anything.»
