Cresson mignon: functional home-made Easter decoration

Do you have the time and inclination to do your own Easter decorating? We'll show you how to easily add a touch of spring to your kitchen.

Functional decorations are pretty rare. So far, all my useful decorative attempts have ended in failure and fallen more into the "trinket" category. That's if I've got as far as the design stage, of course. Because the road from idea to finished product is longer than you think. This spring, however, I've set myself the goal of bringing my design idea to fruition. From my imagination, it found its way into my kitchen. As I have absolutely nothing against fresh shoots in salad, I chose to make a small planting of watercress in eggshells.

You'll need:

  • Scissors
  • Eggs and egg cartons
  • 2 sprays of acrylic paint in the colour of your choice
  • Plastic film
  • Cotton
  • Cress seeds
  • Newsprint

Here's how to do it:

Prepare the egg carton:

  1. Cut the lid and tab off the egg carton. You only need the bottom.
  2. Paint the carton on both sides with a spray about 25cm apart. It's best to start with one side, paint it, leave it to dry and then tackle the other. Be careful: do this outside, when it's not windy, and on a large surface protected by newspaper. I also recommend wearing gloves.

Cress:

  1. Cut the tops off the eggs with a knife and empty them into a salad bowl. Put the latter in the fridge. You can use the eggs in cooking, for an omelette for example.
  2. Grind the shell so that you have an opening that suits you. Make sure the watercress has enough room to grow. Gently wash the empty eggshells and leave them to dry. It is also advisable to remove the inner skin. [[image:7578528]]
  3. Put the eggshells upside down on newspaper and paint them with the spray of the second colour. Paint only the outside of the shell and leave to dry thoroughly. [[image:7578531]]
  4. Once the shells are dry, you can place them in the box. If you wish, you can place a small layer of cotton wool between the eggs and the carton. [[image:7578532]]
  5. Place a small piece of cling film and wet cotton in the bottom of each egg as a germination layer for the watercress roots. Be sure to use colourless, unscented cotton.
  6. Sprinkle the seeds over the cotton. If you want to be able to harvest a denser cress, feel free to put more seeds.

Important: make sure the cotton is always damp. The best thing is to put a pipette of water in the shells every day. What's more, watercress needs light to germinate. You therefore need to place your planting in the right spot.

After a few days, the cress is ready to harvest.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
