How to layer summer looks
by Stephanie Vinzens
Cool morning air turned stifling midday heat – the summer formula for confusion in front of the closet. Luckily, there’s a piece of clothing that can solve this problem in one fell swoop.
Who hasn’t been there – to wear a jacket or not to wear a jacket? While you’re left sweltering all day long, the mornings and evening can still prove quite chilly. So, you either carry a jacket around with you all day or simply endure the intermittent cold. Or you could reach for the ultimate summer alternative to a jacket: a button-down shirt.
The thin, buttoned garment is easy to pull on as a temporary extra layer over summer outfits. It doesn’t trap heat and gives your shoulders and arms that bit of extra heat when it gets chilly. The best part? Button-down shirts take up hardly any space. Should things get too hot during the day, you can fold it up and throw it in your bag. Alternatively, you can tie it around your waist or simply roll up the sleeves to expose some skin.
Shirts are not only practical, but also a fashion staple for the warmer months. By adding another layer to your outfit, they create an interesting look with more depth. And the possible combinations are endless. Whether you prefer a formal or casual look, there are a variety of designs to suit your personal taste or occasion.
Wear an oversized button-down shirt over a silk slip dress, for example, a striped version with shorts and a white T-shirt, or a linen version with loose suit pants and a tank top. You can find the right shirt to round off about any outfit. But I definitely recommend you go for loose cuts and natural fibres. Wide shirts not only look more casual and modern, but are also nicely airy. Breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen and silk also feel particularly pleasant on the skin at high temperatures.
