Beeztees sniffing mat is a feast for your dog’s nose

What to do if your four-legged friend gulps down his food within seconds? Make your dog work for his food.
Dogs knows exactly how to use their puppy eyes to get what they want. Our family dog Finn is known to manipulate anyone to get a treat. When its mealtime, he empties his bowl in a frantic rush, although he’s never had to share his food with anyone. Finn is even famous in the pet shop – he’s the record holder in speed-eating the welcome goodies. Chewing doesn’t seem to be his strength. Much unlike gulping. That's why I'm looking for a way to teach him to eat more slowly.
After a short search, I found the pet brand Beeztees. The snuffle mat «Doeka» is exactly what I was looking for. It’s fun and games for Finn – and, unlike other toys, looks good, too. I like the design.

I puppy sniffing mat as a substitute for a dog bowl – how come? The pastel-coloured mat features strips of fabric of different lengths, various play elements and structures that make it difficult for my dog to access the treats. Before I feed him, I hide his dry food on and in the mat. It takes him quite some time to sniff his way to all his food. This keeps him busy and makes sure he takes his time while eating. So much time that he – finally – chews every single piece of dry food before he swallows it. The larger flaps can even hide small chewing bones and sticks.

I'm amazed. «Doeka» kills two birds with one stone: it offers my Pomeranian a playful way to eat his food and trains his sense of smell at the same time. If Finn is successful in search for a goodie, he gets to eat it. It’s a win-win situation.
The mat is made of jogging fabric. It gives it a soft feel. I had doubt that it would withstand Finn's shar teeth. But it did. After a week, it still looks like new. Apart from a few stains. However, these can be washed out by hand.

Besides, I'm surprised how long my Pomeranian keeps himself busy with it. If your four-legged friend is hectic, attach the mat to a table leg so that it doesn't roll up, crumple up or turn upside down. The rather small dimensions of 50 by 50 centimetres are large enough for puppies and small dogs.
The sniffing mat is so decorative that I don’t put it away when Finn isn’t using it. And he seems to like it: he no uses it as a daybed. Clearly not because it smells of food, not because it’s so cosy.

When I’m not exploring the depths of the sea as an open water diver, I enjoy plunging into the world of fashion. On the streets of Paris, Milan and New York is where I keep my eyes peeled for the latest trends. And I’ll show you how to take them from the catwalk to your everyday life.
