3 ways to style your underappreciated cardigans

Chic poncho, elegant cape or trendy balaclava? Take your autumn and winter looks to the next level with these styling ideas for scarves.
Scarves are much more than a warm accessory. Cleverly styled, they’re a snazzy statement piece that has the power to give your outfit a personal touch and transform entire looks. Find out how to reinterpret this practical accessory below.
The best way to create a poncho effect is with a wide, long scarf. You need plenty of fabric so you can drape it around your shoulders to cover at least half of your upper body. Just have some fun with it, try out different wrapping techniques until you’re happy with the look. The result should be somewhere between regal and cosy.
It doesn’t get much easier than this. Loosely throw both ends of your scarf over your shoulders so they flap in the wind, giving you superheroine vibes – just like a cape should. This look works well with pretty much any type of scarf. Depending on the wind strength and how slippery the material combination of your scarf and top is, it might be worth using a brooch to pin the two ends together at the back. It’s also a pretty touch.
Last winter, my coworker Laura wrote about the balaclava trend. And it’s still going strong this year. Instead of actually buying a balaclava, you can simply repurpose your scarf. Wrap it loosely around your head or tie it in a knot, so it doesn’t move about too much and warms your ears. The technique is very easy. Wrap the scarf once around your neck, pull the two ends through the loop at the front and pull it over the back of your head, voilà! By the way, a balaclava also looks great in combination with a cap or beanie.
Has endless love for shoulder pads, Stratocasters and sashimi, but a limited tolerance for bad impressions of her Eastern Swiss dialect.
