9 pieces that’ll put an end to your search for affordable summer basics

A simple tank top is an unbeatable classic – but now and again you might want to amp up the sophistication. With the help of these three hacks, I transformed an undershirt into a backless top and other outfits in just a few simple steps.
You’ll need: an elastic tank top with a neckline (mine is a V-neck) Ideally, your top will be cut at least a bit shorter; otherwise you’ll end up with an unsightly amount of fabric at the bottom.
How to do it: put the top on as you normally would, slip your arm out of one of the straps and thread it through the inside of the top until it comes out at the bottom. Now pull it up and carefully slip back into it. Adjust the fabric so that the twist sits nicely centred at the front and back. To finish off, drape the fabric at the bottom. Your new bralette is ready to go.
You’ll need: any tank top and a lace at least 240 cm long. I used two black, round laces tied together, each 150 cm in length.
How to do it: thread the lace through the two straps. Put the whole thing round your neck, with the lace sitting at the back of your neck and the tank top hanging down at the front. You may have to tighten the top by pulling the back section forwards. The reason being the neckline on the back is often cut higher and you’d be able to see it if you didn’t make this adjustment. Now cross the two laces at the neck. This bit’s important otherwise the top won’t fit. Then pull the laces forward under your armpits and thread them along the sides of your top.
Put it on and tie the laces together at the back. Now you can enjoy how nice the back of the top looks in the mirror.
You’ll need: a bra and any tank top. The higher the neckline, the more you can crop it as you won’t be flashing anything at the top.
How to do it: turn the top inside out and then tighten it upside down so that the straps are at the bottom and the hem is at the top. Put your bra on over it. Then pull the straps up, slip your arms through them normally and enjoy the fresh breeze around your tummy.
