From sleep to street: why pyjama bottoms are my must-have item this spring
by Stephanie Vinzens
A stage legend, superwoman and Swiss by choice, Tina Turner died on 24 May 2023 in Küsnacht, Zurich. She was 83 years of age. As well as her music, it’s her iconic outfits that have stuck with me.
One push notification after another muscle their way onto our smartphone screens: «Tina Turner has died at the age of 83». We all go quiet for a moment, all of us sure to have at least one hit from the singer’s seemingly endless discography reverberating through our heads. It’s a little sad – the countless times we’ve belted out Private Dancer or What’s Love Got To Do With It have, in a way, brought us all together.
Between the launch of Anna Mae Bullock’s career as Little Ann in 1957, her transformation into Tina Turner in 1960 and her death in 2023, there have been 10 studio albums, various greatest hits and live albums, a Guinness World Record, 12 Grammy Awards and not one, but two spots in the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As is only fitting for the Queen of Rock and Roll.
In addition to all this, however, the thing that’ll stick with me is her outrageously good stage looks. Think short hemlines, high heels and sparkly sequins. Here are three style lessons we should all take from Tina Turner:
Regardless of whether she was in her twenties, forties or sixties, the Queen of Rock and Roll remained true to her signature look. Although she was sometimes seen on stage in a denim jacket or leather trousers, she was usually associated with one thing – minidresses. And these could be glittery, fluttery, flowing and have necklines and leg slits as dizzying as her heels.
Remember: fashion should be fun. At any age.
Sure, there’s such a thing as minimalism. I personally stockpile wardrobe basics that are almost exclusively monochrome, preferring to combine white T-shirts with blueish jeans. But let’s be honest – how boring is that? Why not let your inner Tina out more often and add a little textile glamour with glitter and shimmer? Metallics are in right now anyway, so that’s as good a cue to do so as any.
Remember: a little glitter never hurt anyone.
When Tina Turner’s name is mentioned, you immediately picture her in razor-sharp clarity. Her aforementioned signature look has burned itself into our memories – just like the lyrics to her songs. It goes without saying that your style doesn’t have to consist of short hemlines and high heels. However, discovering your own style and staying true to it can only be a good thing. It helps you combine pieces more easily and leads to fewer bad buys. It’s kind of like having your own corporate identity.
Remember: discover your own style and stay true to it.
