Psyllium seeds are the seeds of a species of plantain, Plantago afra, native to the desert regions of North Africa and Southwest Asia. Psyllium seeds contain mucilage, which swells in water. When soaked psyllium seeds are stirred into natural yogurt, they give the yogurt a creamy consistency. They fill the intestines and can help facilitate bowel movements based on experience.

Dextrinated psyllium seeds have been rolled and thus broken open. The resulting heat and some moisture activate the enzymes in the psyllium seeds. These enzymes convert the starch contained in the psyllium seeds into sugar building blocks known as "dextrins." Psyllium seeds contain 10-30% mucilage.
