Many beer connoisseurs consider the premium lager Budweiser Budvar Original to be the best Czech beer overall. This traditional beer, brewed by the state-owned Budějovický Pivovar (Budweiser Brewery, with an annual production of 1.2 million hectoliters) in the South Bohemian city of Budweis (České Budějovice), is made using Saaz hops, Moravian malt, and deep spring water. The unusually long maturation period of 90 days contributes to the beer's smooth mouthfeel and its finely bitter character.

The golden Budweiser beer, with its moderately developed foam head, has an original gravity of 11.9% and an alcohol content of 5%. This pleasantly drinkable premium lager has a slightly smoky aroma and a long, flavorful finish. For some die-hard Pilsner purists, Budweiser Budvar Original may be too mild. On the other hand, in Germany, where Czech beer enjoys an excellent reputation, beer enthusiasts particularly appreciate this elegant mildness, which is associated with relatively low carbonation.
