Product details
The Iowa-class ships were the last major battleships of the US Navy. This included the sister ships BB-61 Iowa and BB-62 New Jersey. However, the most famous battleship of the Iowa class was the BB-63 Missouri. With 212,000 horsepower, this heavily armed colossus could reach a top speed of 33 knots. Its main armament consisted of nine 16-inch (40.6 cm) guns, distributed across three triple turrets (two forward and one aft) with a maximum range of up to 40 km. The Iowa-class ships were 270.4 meters long and had a relatively narrow hull with a maximum width of 33 meters, allowing them to pass through the Panama Canal without difficulty.
The USS Missouri was commissioned in 1944 and participated in numerous operations during the Pacific War. On September 2, 1945, the instrument of unconditional surrender of the Japanese forces was signed aboard the USS Missouri. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950, the USS Missouri was deployed with its sister ships for fire support and was placed in reserve in 1955. In 1986, the ship was completely renovated, modernized, and equipped with the latest weaponry. During the Gulf War in 1991, the Missouri was deployed one last time and was retired in 1993 after nearly 50 years of service.
