After the overwhelming worldwide success of "The Threepenny Opera," a "Threepenny Film" is set to conquer the big screen as well. For this, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill are even brought on board. However, the plan to film the story of the crook Mackie Messer, who has run away with Polly, the daughter of beggar king Peachum, soon threatens to become a fiasco: While Brecht aims to create the most extraordinary film of all time, the producers are driven purely by economic interests. A bitter battle for the authorship of the film begins.
Director Joachim A. Lang blends reality and fiction, seamlessly shifting between Brecht's struggle against the film industry of the 1920s and his vision of a "Threepenny Film," leading up to our present day, which makes Brecht's societal critique seem more relevant than ever.
