After the overwhelming global success of "The Threepenny Opera," a "Threepenny Film" is set to conquer the big screen as well. For this, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill are even brought on board. However, the plan to film the story of the crook Mackie Messer, who has run away with Polly, the daughter of beggar king Peachum, soon threatens to become a fiasco: While Brecht aims to create the most extraordinary film of all time, the producers are solely focused on economic interests. A bitter struggle for the authorship of the film begins.

Director Joachim A. Lang blends reality and fiction, seamlessly transitioning between Brecht's battle against the film industry of the 1920s and his vision of a "Threepenny Film," extending to our present day, which makes Brecht's societal critique appear more relevant than ever.
