Major Seth Bradner's (John Dehner) biggest worry at Fort Laramie is the constant problems with the nearby Sioux Indians. But new unrest is brewing within the walls of the fort as news of unrest between the North and the South reaches them. When war is officially declared between the North and the South, Major Bradner and the cavalrymen withdraw from the South and return to Virginia and their home in the South. But their journey home takes them through Sioux territory and they are attacked. When a messenger manages to bring news to the fort, Captain James "Jamie" Tenslip (Gregg Palmer) must decide whether to help them.

Bel-Air Productions, the company run by Howard Koch and Aubrey Schenck, produced a whole series of mid-budget westerns (as well as horror films) in the 1950s and they had a penchant for forts. "Fort Yuma" (also directed by Lesley Selander) and "Fort Bowie" (directed by Koch), for example, as well as this one. Maybe it was because they had a lease on the location in Kanab, Utah, and its wooden fort.
Incidentally, Harry Dean Stanton made his film debut here, but is not listed in the cast.
