The history of the Polonez begins in late 1972. A successor to the 125p model was planned. In 1974, an agreement was signed between Pol-Mot and the Italian FIAT group, transferring the construction work to the Italians. Later that same year, design work began at the Centro Stile Fiat. The first prototypes of the car, referred to as 125PN (Polacco Nuova Polski Nowy), were already created in 1975.
The name was chosen in 1978 as a result of a survey among the readers of Życie Warszawy. The new hatchback body featured modern aesthetics and a high level of safety for its time.
