The history of the Polonez begins in late 1972. A successor to the 125p model was planned. In 1974, an agreement was signed between Pol-Motem and the Italian FIAT group to leave the design work to the Italian side. Design work began that same year at the Centro Stile Fiat. The first prototypes of the car, referred to as the 125PN (Polacco Nuova Polski Nowy), were already created in 1975.
The name was chosen in a reader survey conducted by the newspaper Życie Warszawy in 1978. The new hatchback body features a modern aesthetic and a high level of safety for its time.
