Building on the success of the C. R. 32 "Freccia," which was known for its high reliability and operational efficiency during the Spanish Civil War, the Italian manufacturer Fiat developed the new C. R. 42 "Falco" in the late 1930s. The new single-seat biplane retained the fixed landing gear and open cockpit of its predecessor but featured important innovations such as a frame made of alloy and steel covered with canvas and metal. Thanks to its supercharged air-cooled radial engine, the Fiat A.74, the Fiat C. R. 42 could reach speeds of 400 km/h. It had exceptional maneuverability, highly valued by Italian pilots, but suffered from the configuration limitations of biplanes. It was capable of successfully engaging Gloster Gladiators but was soon outclassed by faster and heavily armed monoplanes like the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire. Several Fiat C. R. 42s were deployed alongside the fighter aircraft Fiat G 50 and the bombers BR-20 and CANT Z 1007 during the Battle of Britain as part of the Italian Air Force Corps.
