Product details
Arbutus unedo is also known as the "strawberry tree" because its fruits resemble strawberries. These fruits are edible but do not ripen well in every climate, which is why they generally do not taste good. The tree grows into a medium-sized tree with a short, reddish-brown trunk and a compact crown. The strawberry tree is a particularly colorful addition to any garden. In autumn and early winter, clusters of white and pale pink flowers appear, accompanied by yellow and red berries that somewhat resemble strawberries. This ornamental tree is widespread in Southern Europe. The strawberry tree is the national tree of Italy due to its glossy green leaves, white flowers, and red fruits. These colors are reminiscent of the Italian flag.
Care
The Arbutus requires plenty of water. Do not let the soil dry out too much, but ensure that water can drain well. The strawberry tree prefers a spot in full sun or partial shade. The tree can tolerate some wind. Be mindful of low temperatures; the plant is not fully frost-resistant and needs protection during very cold periods. Arbutus can grow between 3 and 5 meters tall in our climate. The tree does not need to be pruned and is evergreen. The fruits take about twelve months to ripen, making it colorful throughout the year.
