Arbutus Unedo is also known as the "strawberry tree" because the fruit on the tree looks like strawberries. These fruits are edible, but unfortunately they do not ripen in every climate, which is why they generally do not taste good. The tree grows into a medium-sized tree with a short, reddish-brown trunk and a compact crown. The strawberry tree is a particularly colourful tree for any garden. Panicles of white and pale pink flowers appear in autumn and early winter. These can be accompanied by yellow and red berries that look a little like strawberries. This ornamental tree is widespread in southern Europe. The strawberry tree is the national tree of Italy because of its glossy green leaves, white flowers and red fruits. These colours are reminiscent of the Italian flag.

Care
The Arbutus needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out too much, but make sure that the water can drain away easily. The strawberry tree prefers a spot in the sun or partial shade. The tree can tolerate a little wind. Watch out for low temperatures; the plant is not completely hardy and must be protected during very cold periods. Arbutus can grow between 3 and 5 metres tall in our climate. The tree does not need to be pruned. This plant is also evergreen. The fruits take around twelve months to ripen, making it a colourful plant at any time of year.
