Most children's bikes are equipped with brakes at the front and rear. Backpedal brakes are only found on the smaller children's bikes, as these are initially easier to use than rim brakes. In most cases, coaster brakes are not required on bikes from 20 inches upwards. As far as the number of gears is concerned, only one gear is absolutely sufficient, especially for small children. However, as soon as longer distances are ridden, several gears are useful. Suspension and disc brakes are practically only found on children's mountain bikes.
When buying a child's bicycle, the wheel size of the bicycle is decisive. The bigger your child grows, the longer his or her stride length becomes and this provides a good reference point. In order to sit and steer the bicycle optimally, the wheel diameter must be correct. For children between 2 and 4 years, bicycles with 12 to 16 inch wheels are suitable. From the age of 3 years, it is possible to switch to bikes from 16 to 18 inches. Between 6 and 8 years of age, 20-inch bikes are ideal and from 8 years of age it is possible to ride on children's bikes of 24-inch and larger. Youth bikes are usually between 26 and 27.5 inches in size.
