How is the optimal cable cross-section determined? To keep voltage drop and cable heating as low as possible, it is necessary to calculate the required cross-section. For this, you need the conductivity of copper (56) and the maximum permissible voltage drop. This is specified as 5% of the onboard voltage for position lights (5% of 12V onboard = 0.6V) or 7% for other consumers (7% of 12V onboard = 0.84V). Additionally, you need the current draw of the consumer in amperes (Watts / onboard voltage).
Formula: Cross-section = 2 x cable length x current (A) / 56 x voltage drop. For a 25W / 12V position light with a cable length of 12m, the following equation results: 2 x cable length (12) x 2.1A (Watts / Volts) / 56 x 0.6V (5% onboard voltage).
