There are many different types of baking tins, such as: loaf tin, springform tin, muffin tin, gugelhupff tin, quiche tin, tart tin and many more. Each baking tin has its own advantages and is recommended for certain types of baked goods, although many tins are versatile and can be used for a variety of recipes:
- Loaf tin: A loaf tin is usually rectangular and has straight sides. It is most often used for baking bread, cakes and terrines. The advantage of the loaf pan is that it has an even shape and defined edges that make it easier to cut the baked goods.
- Springform: A springform pan consists of a base and a ring that can be detached from each other. It is often used for baking cheesecakes, tarts and other baked goods that are difficult to remove from the mould. The advantage of the springform pan is that you can remove the ring and easily take the baked goods out of the pan without damaging them.
- Muffin tin: A muffin tin is a shallow tin with several small, round cavities into which dough is poured. It is used for baking muffins, cupcakes and other small pastries. The advantage of the muffin tin is that you can bake several small pastries at the same time.
- Gugelhupfform: A gugelhupfform has a round shape with a hollow cylinder in the middle. It is used to bake the typical Gugelhupf. The advantage of the Gugelhupfform is that it gives an attractive shape and provides even heat distribution.
- Quiche dish and tart dish: These two baking dishes are almost identical. Both have a flat, round shape usually with a fluted edge and slightly bevelled rim. The difference between a quiche and a tarte is that a tarte is usually prepared sweetly, whereas a quiche is always spicy or savoury. Visually, the tarte often differs from the quiche by having a slightly lower edge. In addition, unlike a quiche, a tarte can also be "covered", i.e. not only have a shortcrust base, but also a lid.
Most baking tins today have a non-stick coating, which prevents dough, cakes or other baked goods from sticking to the tin. This also makes it easier to remove the baked goods from the mould and simplifies cleaning. A non-stick coating usually consists of a thin layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), also known by the brand name "Teflon". PTFE is a synthetic plastic known to provide a very smooth and durable surface. There are also alternative non-stick coatings made from ceramic materials or other coating materials.
