Matatabi provides distraction in certain situations, such as when traveling, moving house, welcoming a new family member, or during vet visits.
Properties per ingredient:
The Matatabi tree is related to the kiwi tree and grows in Asia, particularly in China and Japan. The dried branches of this tree have a unique effect on cats. They contain a substance that relaxes cats and can sometimes induce mild hallucinations.
Matatabi contains actinicin and matatabi-lactone, alkaloids that have a slight chloroform or alcohol-like effect, influencing nerve stimulation in the brains of felines.
Cats that are naturally relaxed often show less interest in the sticks compared to those under stress.
Dosage and use:
Matatabi can be given as a toy. Cats may play with the stick, chew on it, or bite it into pieces. Many cats roll and rub themselves in areas where the stick or its remnants have been.
Removing the bark from the stick can enhance its effect.
Side effects:
There are no harmful side effects. Some cats may react uniquely to the sticks; for instance, some owners have reported their cats appearing "ecstatic" with pleasure, and a few may drool slightly. This is harmless.
Dosage:
Do not administer more than two to three times a week to prevent habituation, which can make the sticks less interesting. Remove the stick as soon as the cat has finished playing.
