Question about Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box
As far as I know, the box only works with a secondary device that streams media, so if I go through the TV OS, the box won't work, is that right?

I agree. It will not work. There are connections for e.g. PS4, Android TV box etc... can't imagine that this works without an external box.
Unless your TV has an HDMI output, then it would work again. The newer TVs have such an output.
