The Nepal-Tibetan carpet gained significance in the 1980s when Tibetan refugees in exile in Nepal began weaving carpets. A new economic sector emerged. From the earlier temple and pillar carpets, seat cushions, and saddle bags, which were primarily woven with highland wool, an attractive new type of carpet with modern design quickly developed. Today's Tibetan carpets are characterized by their play of colors, durability, and resilience.
