To be allowed to label products with the Downpass, manufacturers must ensure that only down and feathers from controlled animal husbandry are used.

For a successful Downpass audit, both announced and unannounced inspections are conducted on the breeding farms: Cages and force-feeding are prohibited, and any form of feather harvesting from live animals is forbidden. Adequate housing, sufficient supply of feed and fresh water, protection of the animals from diseases and natural predators, as well as care by knowledgeable staff are fundamental prerequisites for passing the audit.
