Can I use the HDMI out on my laptop to connect to the portable screen with USB type C or do I need a different cable? According to Br..k.ch support this is possible, but I see different answers here.

The adapter can connect USB-C to HDMI. I really can't imagine that it works the other way round, it's not just a few wires, the USB-C signal has to be adapted to HDMI, for which it also has some electronics integrated in the HDMI plug (that's why it's so big and gets a bit warm) - it doesn't just work the other way round.
