This should work if the iMac has a Mini Displayport and the MacBook has a Thunderbolt. Press the key combination Command-F2 on the iMac that is to serve as the monitor.
The adapters included in PureLink's iSeries have a Thunderbolt-compatible Mini DisplayPort connector on one side that converts the signal to HDMI-A, Single-Link DVI (24+1) or VGA on the other side. According to the manufacturer, the item description is correct.

As long as your Macbook has a thunderbolt entry this should work.
That should be possible. Could you please tell us which hard drive it is?
