There's nothing better than slipping into a freshly made bed. But there's also nothing more annoying than changing the bed linen. This is now set to change with "The Koa Cover".
A little explosion in my head. That's what an impressive idea like that of the young label "Koa" triggers in me. It reinvents bed linen as I knew it before: instead of on the underside, the zip opening is in the middle of the duvet. This not only makes changing a duvet cover easier, it also speeds it up. And by a whole 12 seconds. At 26.4 seconds, "The Koa Cover" beats the previous world record time for changing a duvet cover of 39.41 seconds.
A special zip system allows the bed to be changed in just three steps: Spread out the bed linen, place the duvet and close the zip in the middle and at the bottom ends. There are cords at the corners to tie the zip together so that nothing gets tangled. The only drawback: you can't test the duvet cover yet because it first has to be produced and financed. That's why the Kickstarter campaign was launched last week for the innovative duvet cover, the patent for which is already being clarified.
The duvet cover from Koa was developed by Ben King and Luke Gray, who have already optimised several products for the home on behalf of Joseph Joseph. This time, too, the designers are using their own label to tackle an everyday problem that is often overlooked. Luke's grandma stopped changing the duvet cover at some point because it was too difficult for her. This motivated the co-founders to find a solution. They made over 30 prototypes and spent months testing the Koa covers with Luke's grandma.
For the fabric design of the duvet covers, the industrial designers teamed up with illustrator Kitty McCall. She has created two patterns that are graphic and come in muted, earthy colours. There are also single-colour versions for minimalists. All models have the zip on the top and are covered by a fabric flap. The price of the bed linen starts at £69 - around 80 francs.
Initial figures from Kickstarter indicate that the bed linen can be produced quickly: "We reached 100 per cent of our goal in just 39 hours. This means that we have all the systems in place to be able to launch on 19 June once the campaign is over," says Ben. The duvet cover is then scheduled to be available in various European, British and American sizes from November 2020. "Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we have been in close contact with our production, warehousing and shipping partners to monitor and assess any potential impact on our schedule."
Patience has never been my strong point, but it's worth waiting for the smart bed linen that will mean bed-making will never be the same again - in a positive sense. All that's missing is someone to take on an easy-to-cover bed sheet and turn this once unpopular activity into my new hobby.
