With plummeting temperatures, these undershirts are my must-haves

There’s no such thing as bad weather, there’s only bad clothing. Or so they say. But still, with the right essentials, even a merciless winter becomes more bearable. That’s why I rely on the following basic item in bitter-cold temperatures.
Earlier this month, it was time for me to pack my suitcase. Why? Because I traditionally spend December in my home town, Berlin, rather than in Zurich. If you’ve ever spent time in Germany’s capital at this time of year, you’ll know: Berlin winters are brutal. So my packing list made for a pretty boring read. Tights, thermals, undershirts. By now, I own a considerable collection of the latter. And it bears the promising name «True Confidence».
Really warm and pretty
When it comes to undershirts, I’m not primarily using them to boost my confidence. Instead, keeping warm is my top priority when dealing with sub-zero temperatures. If an item of clothing meets these criteria, it’ll forever have a place in my heart. This is exactly what happened a year ago on a trip to Italy in October. A sudden cold spell took me by surprise. I needed a solution fast and found it – as recommended by a travelling friend – in a Calida store close-by. This «True Confidence», in the shape of beautiful undershirts made of a virgin wool-silk mix, saved my holidays and has been my go-to winter basic ever since.
The cool thing is these comfortable shirts are available in various designs. From spaghetti straps to long sleeve with a turtleneck – there’s a right cut for pretty much every need. I recommend going for a size smaller than you really would. A hugging fit will provide you with more warmth. Bonus points go to the cute minimalist design and the option to combine your top with matching bottoms if temperatures plummet further.

Emotional attachment to clothing, really? Yes, it’s a thing. I found this out during my interview with professional organiser Dagmar Schäfer. In my case, I have plenty of love for these undershirts. Whether I’m in Italy, Switzerland, Germany or anywhere else in the world, I reach for my secret textile weapon when it’s freezing cold outside. Depending on the model, you can wear it as a base or top layer (think turtleneck). These light grey, off-white and black items always look great. Especially if you take good care of them and wash them by hand or in a gentle wash cycle. What more can you ask for from an undershirt? Not much.
As I’m typing these words, it’s a chilly -5 degrees outside. And my black «True Confidence» tank top is keeping me warm. Along with my layer look. Not only does it warm my heart, it also makes me comfortable. It must be love.
