Road conditions also change during this cold and wet period. So when is the right time to fit winter tyres? If you change your winter tyres during the month of October, you are generally on the safe side. Changing your tyres is not rocket science - we explain how you can easily do it yourself.

As soon as the outside temperature is constant or below seven degrees Celsius, it's time to fit winter tyres. If in doubt, put the winter tyres on a little earlier or remove them a little later in spring. In principle, it is not forbidden to drive on winter tyres in summer. Conversely, you are liable to prosecution if you are driving on summer tyres when winter suddenly sets in.

And this is how changing tyres works

  1. Prepare the winter tyres, check the minimum tread depth and whether the tyres have a rolling direction
  2. Park the vehicle on a level and firm surface. Apply the handbrake and engage first gear. For an automatic vehicle, set the parking position.
  3. Loosen all wheel nuts of the wheel to be changed very easily using the wheel cross. Then place the jack in the designated position on the vehicle and raise the vehicle until the tyre no longer touches the ground.
  4. Then carefully remove the hubcaps (if fitted) using a screwdriver and a lever movement.
  5. Now you can completely unscrew all the wheel nuts crosswise and remove the wheel from the hub.
  6. Now the winter tyres can be fitted. Check again whether the tyres to be fitted have a rolling direction. Always fit the tyres with the greater remaining tread depth on the drive axle - at the rear in the case of rear-wheel drive and at the front in the case of front-wheel drive.
  7. Place the wheels on the holes provided and initially only screw the wheel nuts on hand-tight.
  8. Now you can carefully lower the car again and remove the jack.
  9. Now tighten the wheel nuts firmly. Make sure that the nuts are always tightened crosswise so that the wheel is optimally seated. We recommend using a torque spanner here, with which you can precisely adhere to the tightening torque specified by the manufacturer.
  10. Once all the tyres have been changed, drive a short lap and then check the tight fit of the wheels again.
  11. Reinstall the hubcaps if necessary and check the air pressure of your tyres.
  12. After approx. 50 km, tighten the wheel nut again using the torque spanner.
  13. It's best to clean the summer tyres and store them safely in your garage or a storage room.
