What can the "SneakerWash" shoe wash bag from Miele do?

The Miele "SneakerWash" cleaning set is supposed to make washing sneakers at home gentler and more efficient. I've tried it out.

My trainers are in use almost every day. And you can tell sooner or later - especially because they not only accompany me through everyday life, but also on dog walks. It's practical that Miele is launching a sneaker cleaning set that I'm allowed to test.

As soon as I open the packaging, three sachets come tumbling out. They are the cleaning tabs included in the set. I put them aside for a moment, the somewhat wedge-shaped shoe wash bag is more interesting for now.

So far, I've either left my trainers to their own devices in the washing machine or put them in a laundry net to keep the rumble at least a little in check. The Miele washing bag made of 3-layer mesh fabric is now designed to cushion the thunder in the drum. It also boasts an «innovative washing system», easy handling and useful features such as a separate lace compartment.

In fact, the bag makes a very high-quality and well-padded impression. Each shoe has its own small garage, separated by a shock-absorbing centre wall - in which the unthreaded laces can be stored. Both garages are additionally equipped with microfibre cleaning strips on three sides, there is a small Velcro hatch for the cleaning rod and even the handle of the zip can be safely stowed away under a flap. So far so well thought out.

The set contains three tabs. The 12-tab refill costs around 25 francs.

Then let's get started: I fiddle the shoe laces out of their eyelets and let them disappear into the partition. A press stud prevents them from snaking out during the wash cycle and disappearing into the depths of the machine. Next, I place the shoes in their compartments and zip the bag closed. Hatch open, tab in, hatch closed. There's nothing more for me to do - but if your trainers weigh more than 500 grammes, the manufacturer recommends putting a counterweight in the machine. In any case, I only place the compact set in the drum. To the questions that now arise «Which programme? How long? Do I have to spin?» The packaging box has the answers: Delicate wash programme, 30 degrees, 60 minutes, 600 rpm. All right, I'll press start.

The box tells you exactly what to do.

For the next hour, I can hardly hear anything from the bathroom apart from the rotating water. No rumbling, no rattling. Then the washing machine beeps - it's ready, I can open the door. The «SneakerWash» bag is just damp, as are the sparkling clean shoes that I pull out. I free the laces from their enclosure and leave both the freshly washed shoes and the mesh bag to dry until the next day. And?

Before.
Before.
After.
After.

In a nutshell

Less rumble, same cleanliness

My trainers are clean, of course - after all, they have been cleaned for an hour. Are they cleaner than after previous washes? No. Would I pay just under 59 francs for the "SneakerWash" set and then 25 francs for a refill of tabs (12 pieces)? To be honest, probably not. But if you're a real sneaker head and/or like to spend money on things that aren't absolutely necessary but are nice to have, you're sure to enjoy this gadget. If only because it remains so wonderfully quiet in the drum.
