Our editors’ graphics card recommendations – September 2023
by Kevin Hofer
Last week was dominated by Apple's iPhone event. The editorial team also tested various hardware. Steam's anniversary was also the occasion for a look back at the history of the gaming platform.
Which graphics card for which budget? Kevin looked into this question at the beginning of the week. He has expanded his guide to include the latest models from AMD. These are not cheap either, but in some cases offer better value for money than Nvidia's cards.
Fujifilm's new medium format camera with 100 megapixels is also not cheap, but still good. I have tested the GFX 100 II extensively and find it to be a great tool for professional photography. Its image quality is simply fun.
I don't yet know whether Apple's new iPhones are as much fun. The presentation on Tuesday evening was, as always, full of bombast and superlatives. Interestingly, the new iPhone is cheaper in this country than the last one. I took this as an opportunity to take a closer look at the price development over the last few years.
Meanwhile, Jan has already taken a look at a few functions from the latest iOS 17 beta. In two short tips, he explains how to create a contact poster and how the offline maps in Apple Maps work.
What doesn't work for our guest author Valentin are multiplayer games. While other people find playing games together more fun, the opposite is true for Valentin: the stress of coordination and the added pressure make him feel less relaxed. He prefers to escape everyday life alone.
These days, you can easily buy the games you need on Steam. The platform is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. Philipp has taken a look at the eventful history of Steam - with various controversies and successes.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 could also be a success. Michelle likes the large outdoor display and good performance in her test of the foldable smartphone. But she is not completely satisfied.
Florian, who tested the matching Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, feels the same way. It's good, but also kind of boring - or as Florian puts it: "The Galaxy Watch series is the FC Bayern Munich of smartwatches."
The Crew Motorfest looks much more exciting. Domagoj tested the racing game with a beautiful open world. It is set in Hawaii and is strongly reminiscent of Forza Horizon.
Kevin also played something, namely a mobile game. "Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis" combines several titles from the series in one package. Although it is entertaining to play, it suffers from pay-to-win and gacha mechanics.
My fingerprint often changes so drastically that my MacBook doesn't recognise it anymore. The reason? If I'm not clinging to a monitor or camera, I'm probably clinging to a rockface by the tips of my fingers.
