Travelling on the Limmat in an inflatable boat - my recommendations for the trip!

When I floated down the Limmat to Dietikon in a rubber dinghy for the first time last year, I must admit I was pretty excited. I've since had this experience several times and have become a real fan of it. Now I know exactly how to pack my things so that nothing gets lost or unnecessarily wet. I would like to share these tips with you.

Before you start, you should think about what you need for your Limmat trip, which will take around 2 hours.

My personal packing list:

  • Inflatable boat with paddle (I transport it in an Ikea bag)
  • Well-functioning air pump (you'll be glad of this when you're standing in the burning sun and just want to get into the water)
  • Bath towel and change of clothes (in drybag)
  • Money, ZVV travelcard and SwissPass (if available) for the return journey on the S-Bahn
  • Splashproof music box
  • Drinks
  • Fruit or snacks
  • Mobile and/or camera in waterproof container
  • Sun cream
  • Sunglasses (My tip: don't take overly expensive glasses in case you lose them)

A very good place to start is Wipkinger Park. There is enough space there to inflate the rubber dinghy on the grass and it is also very easy to get into the Limmat.

It's best to stow all your important belongings such as keys, money, mobile, ZVV network card and SwissPass in a waterproof bag for the return journey. The dry bag is best for towels and spare clothes.

After I've made myself comfortable in the boat and carefully stowed everything away, I set off towards the Höngger Wehr. On the way, you come across the craziest air mattresses and inflatable boats you can imagine. From turtles and dolphins to pieces of pizza, there's a lot floating around.

It is important to keep to the left at the Höngger Weir, especially if the current is strong. The exit is very well marked with signs and arrows long before the weir. If in doubt, it is better to get out earlier before you drift too long or are unfamiliar with the area.

You can read the river rules here

On the other side of the weir, you can get back in and continue your trip in a relaxed manner. Now is also a good time to have a cool drink. I always have my Bluetooth box with me so that I can listen to music during the journey. The floating drinks cooler is great for drinks, as you can attach it to the boat.

On arrival in Dietikon, I get off at station level like everyone else. The large meadow is a great place for a barbecue or just a picnic. Afterwards, I take the S-Bahn back home.
