Puffer jackets are looking plumper than ever. Kanye West is to blame. He has no love for supposedly superfluous topstitching. Other designers are already following suit.
When I throw the keyword puffer jacket at you, a thick jacket filled with down - or better still with animal-friendly alternatives - with stitched seams probably appears in your mind's eye. A cold-weather staple that has probably long been a firm favourite in your, my and pretty much every other wardrobe. This winter, however, the piece is out. Yep, I hate to break it to you, but none other than Kanye West has made sure that our beloved puffer jackets have to do without one small but crucial detail: the seams.
For this news, let's rewind to 2021, when Mr West had a promising collaboration with US brand Gap (which ended prematurely in 2022 amid much media attention and drama) and launched the "YEEZY GAP Round Jacket" in June.
Round, different, kind of ugly, I'll keep it short: the jacket ended up in my cart - and has been hanging on my clothes rail ever since. Almost unworn. Although I still think it's cool and like its special look, it's also bulky and, to be honest, pointless in really freezing cold weather due to the lack of a zip.
Luckily, Spanish brand Loewe has thought a little further ahead and brought out its own version of the Round Jacket this season. It looks very similar to Kanye's model, but has a zip fastening and is becoming a favourite of trendsetters such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Taylor Russell. Which in plain language means: further copies from other labels will not be long in coming. At designer Rick Owens, for example, a, shall I say, gilet version of the it-piece has just been spotted on the catwalk in Paris.
So quilting seams, which are supposed to ensure that the filling of the jacket remains evenly distributed and doesn't sag over time, are now a thing of the past? At least on my Yeezy Gap jacket, everything still seems to be exactly where it should be. Minus the zip. The ever-popular Loewe model seems to thrive on the fact that it is even plumper at the bottom than at the top and Rick Owens' interpretation ... is well padded all round. So this could be the beginning of a new buffer era. Or just another fast-moving trend. What do you think?
