The rose - the queen of the garden

Who hasn't admired them? The rose with its noble blossoms and majestic growth. If you like to have flowers in your garden and occasionally make your own bouquets, the rose is just the right flower for you.

From June onwards, it enchants us with its different colours and shapes and, above all, its beguiling fragrance. There's a reason why rose water and rose perfume exist.

I would be happy to give you a few tips on how the rose can thrive in your garden or on the balcony.

Correct location and care for the rose

First of all, it is important that you give the rose an airy and sunny location. As its roots penetrate very deeply into the soil, it needs a rose pot or a large container. The shape of the rose pot is particularly deep, which means that the roots can develop not only in width but also in depth. You can find suitable pots wherever rose plants are on sale.

I recommend a medium-heavy soil that gives the rose enough nutrients. It's best to buy a rose soil and the right rose fertiliser to give the rose plant beautiful green leaves and lots of flowers. The rose does not tolerate waterlogging at all. In general, the rose is somewhat sensitive and susceptible to diseases and pests. Therefore, always ensure that the leaves remain dry when watering. Wet leaves are often attacked by fungal diseases.

Planting roses correctly - but how?

The ideal planting time for roses is in spring and autumn. However, as roses are usually sold in containers these days, they can also be planted all year round. The situation is different for rooted plants, which are offered without a root ball. These are mainly offered in spring, but also in autumn depending on the size of the garden centre. Here it is important that the roses are only planted in frost-free temperatures. The ideal planting time in spring is March to April and in autumn October to November.

Place the root ball in a bucket of water before planting. The planting hole should be large enough to comfortably accommodate the roots. A sharp knife or pruning shears can be used to shorten weak or excessively long roots to the correct length. The rose should be planted in such a way that the grafting point (gnarled part above the soil) is well protected and covered with soil. Tamp the soil down well and water the plant generously.

Pests and diseases

As I mentioned above, roses are very susceptible to diseases and pests. To present beautiful roses in the garden or on the balcony, it is advisable to spray preventively with a fungicide, especially against mildew. The same applies to aphids. Roses are also often attacked by rose cycads or the red spider mite. In advanced summer, the fungal disease rust or sooty mould can also cause problems.

The best thing to do is to seek advice from a specialised dealer depending on the disease or pest that is occurring. Meanwhile, there are also some beneficial and ecologically responsible insecticides and fungicides on the market that are less harmful to the environment. Important: always spray in the early morning - there are still few flying insects about. Wet the plant well on all sides. It should not rain within the next 24 hours, but it should also not be a very hot day with lots of sunshine. Ideal "plant protection weather" is overcast skies without rain.

Which rose suits me?

There are countless types of roses and growth forms. Use plays a major role here. Would you like a climbing rose that unfolds its sea of flowers on a rose arch? How about bedding roses that bloom all summer without interruption? Are you more into nostalgic bush and wild roses? Or how about an English rose?

As you will have realised, there are thousands upon thousands of rose varieties. There are almost no limits to the variety. Here you can find out even more about roses. Now have fun choosing and enjoy your roses!
