2026 promises to be a legendary year for gaming, and not just because of 'GTA 6'.
20,000 games were published on Steam alone last year. That's almost 1,500 more than in the record year of 2024, making it practically impossible to keep track. What is clear is that the next twelve months will be packed with countless game highlights. I've picked out the 100 most promising ones for you.
The list is sorted chronologically by date. Games without an exact date are then sorted alphabetically. Games without an official release date in 2026 are not included

«Nioh 3»
In the third instalment of the dark samurai action RPG series, you face new, monstrous bosses. Look forward to massive and bloody battles.

For fans of the crazy sci-fi animation series «Rick & Morty», a game that is at least as crazy is coming soon. As in its predecessor, you shoot your way through a colourful and super weird universe with the help of various talking weapons.

«Styx: Blades of Greed»
The green goblin is sneaking again. As Styx, you try to get your hands on the most valuable and dangerous resource in the world, which humans, orcs and elves are fighting over. The game promises plenty of creative freedom in your approach.

«Tides of Tomorrow»
In a world reminiscent of the post-apocalyptic film «Waterworld», you fight for survival. The game is based on a mixture of survival, exploration and high-impact decisions.

«Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection»

The next spin-off from Supermassive Games, in which you control a crew with difficult decisions through an interactive horror film. In a distant future, light years away from Earth, you crash-land on an alien planet. Lurking there is an alien organism that can take the form of its prey.

«Half Sword»
Physics-based medieval multiplayer combat games have been an integral part of my friends' and my annual LAN party since «Chivalry» and «War of the Roses». «Half Sword» is in the same vein with great ragdoll effects and lots of blood.

«John Carpenter's Toxic Commando»
Alone or better with three friends, you fight your way through the zombie apocalypse. The focus is on vehicles, which make it much safer to navigate through the muddy, inhospitable world. Reminiscent of «Left 4 Dead» only with a large portion of John Carpenter 80s horror cinema.

«Planet of Lana 2»
The journey of Lana and her cuddly companion continues. The puzzle adventure sends you through a picturesque 2D sci-fi world. Sometimes skill is required and sometimes brain power.

«Super Meat Boy 3D»
Speaking of nerves, they are put through the wringer in the new «Super Meat Boy 3D». As the title suggests, you jump and run in 3D through a world in which the little lump of meat will die a thousand deaths.

«Tears of Metal»
A mysterious meteorite has brought occupiers to your island, which you want to recapture with your Scottish battalion. To do so, you have to slash your way through huge numbers of enemies on vast battlefields. The game has a quirky but captivating style and looks like chaotic fun.

«Toxic Crusaders»
After Peter Dinklage has slipped into the role of the 80s anti-hero on the big screen, you can do the same on your PC or console. As the mutated Toxic Crusader and up to three other characters, you fight your way through a colourful pixel world in this beat 'em up. Unlike the film, the game is based on the animated series.

«Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss»
I've rarely heard a more inappropriate soundtrack than the one in this trailer, but even that makes me want to watch this supernatural thriller. A mining station in the depths of the Pacific is no longer responding. During your rescue mission, you are confronted with cosmic horror.

«In Konbini: One Store. Many Stories»
The game «In Konbini» is much more meditative. Here you take care of a small supermarket in Japan in the 90s. Stock up the shelves, decide which products get a discount and chat to your customers.

In the next spin-off of «Deep Rock», you and up to three other space dwarves dig deep into the bowels of planets. The difference to the original is the roguelike element. «Halloween»
After «Friday the 13», «Evil Dead» and «Killer Klowns from Outer Space», the next 80s horror franchise is being turned into an asynchronous multiplayer game. You play either the masked killer Michael Meyers or four of his victims. They can also command and arm NPCs.

«Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game»
A beautifully animated 2D fighting game that looks just like the cult series. Twelve characters to choose from at launch. In addition to Aang, Katara and Sokka, Korra from the spin-off is also included.

«PVKK: Planet Defence Canon Commander»
An absolutely unwieldy and ingenious title that only Germans could come up with. The game deserves an award for that alone. In terms of gameplay, it sounds just as appealing. You prevent an interplanetary invasion from a bunker. To do this, you interact with a huge Cockpit full of levers, switches and buttons. Marvellous.

«Grand Theft Auto VI»
A game with so much hype that many studios are delaying their titles so as not to get in its way. Hardly any other game is more eagerly awaited than Rockstar's gangster epic.

«Marvel's Wolverine»
After «Spider-Man», Insomniac takes on the next superhero. In contrast to Peter Parker, Wolverine is less squeamish with his opponents. Blood splatters and body parts fly around. Dear Logan has probably been playing a little too much «Mortal Kombat»

«Phantom Blade Zero»
This brilliant-looking action spectacle is being released exclusively for PS5. As an elite fighter, you face all kinds of threats in a dark fantasy world. The boss battles are particularly spectacular, accompanied by a powerful metal soundtrack.

«4:Loop»
Filmmaker J. J. Abrams is teaming up with the designer of «Left 4 Dead». The 4 in the title is probably a clear allusion to the cult co-op zombie series. Instead of the undead, you and your crew fight against an alien invasion in «4:Loop».

«Ace Combat 8»
Flight simulators are few and far between. Action-focused ones have almost completely disappeared from the scene. «Ace Combat» is one of the last remaining franchises. The latest instalment offers ultra-realistic graphics and promises spectacular aerial combat and an exciting campaign.

The adventurous duo returns. In the latest «Broken Sword» instalment - as the series is officially called - George Stobbart and Nico Collard are drawn into a conspiracy involving brutal treasure hunters.

«Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era»
Ubisoft still owns the rights to the brand, but the struggling French company no longer has anything to do with the game. After the disappointing last instalments, this is no loss. Unfrozen is the name of the development studio. The publisher is Hooded Horse, which also publishes «Manor Lords». The new edition of the turn-based fantasy strategy classic also reminded me of the glory days of the 90s when I played it at Gamescom.

Ken Levine, the creator of «Bioshock», is working on a new game that looks like a new «Bioshock». The world consists of strange android creatures, you speak in meaningful dialogues and fight mostly with both hands. You hold weapons in your right hand and fire lightning and fire in your left.

However, there is still hope for fans of the Dark Avenger in the form of this incredibly good-looking Lego game.

In «Cloudpunk» I was already able to explore the dazzling cyberpunk city with my flying vehicle. In «Nivalis», the camera gets closer to the action and turns a delivery service game into a life simulation in which you manage shops and explore the world.

As a big fan of the «Diablo»-like sci-fi action role-playing game «The Ascent», I get excited when the studio is working on a new project. The setting is being retained, but now you are fighting your way through the cyber-noir setting from a first-person perspective.

After «Elden Ring Nightreign», the next multiplayer title is coming from From Software. «The Duskbloods» is based on up to eight players who compete against each other, but also against a variety of monsters. The hands-off demo at Gamescom immediately made me want more. If you're a fan of sci-fi action RPGs like «Mass Effect», you definitely need to make a note of this game.

«Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis»
Lara Croft's debut adventure from 1996 is being completely remade. Thanks to Unreal Engine 5, you can experience the game anew. Unlike the last trilogy, the first part has a much more relaxed tone. A new part is also being worked on and will be released in early 2027.

The two futuristic cyberninja games «Ghostrunner 1 and 2» are followed by a Soulslike in an alternative world during the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. The game mixes historical figures with grotesque horror elements. I was able to try it out at Gamescom and was extremely impressed by the demo.
